What
is Judo? Judo
("gentle way") is a modern Japanese martial art and
combat sport created in Japan in 1882 by Dr Kano Jigoro.
Judo includes throwing, hold downs and, for adults, arm
bars and chokes. Today Judo is practiced as a
competitive sport at all levels, recreationally, or as a
means of self-defence. Zanshin Judo offers both
competitive and recreational streams of judo.

KATA
(forms) are pre-arranged patterns of attack and defence,
practiced for the purpose of perfecting judo techniques,
and to preserve ancient techniques that are historically
important. Knowledge of various kata is a requirement
for the attainment of a higher rank.
RANDORI
is "free practice". The aim of randori is to learn to
apply judo techniques against a resisting opponent.
Some time is spent
learning standing techniques called tachi-waza,
and some time spent on ground work, called ne-waza.
