Tournament:
  • At the Provincial Judo Tournament in November, Megh Palit in the 'Active Start' class, correctly demonstrated Judo exercises & techniques.
  • Hannah Short in the Youth Class, won a silver medal and a Trophy for the fastest Ippon at 4 seconds (check the Photo Section).

  • Registrations are now ongoing right through September - following 'Active Start' on Saturdays, and before classes start Mondays, and Tuesdays.  To expedite the registration process, please download and sign a Membership Application for each new or returning student. Fall registrations started at the Church on September 8th.

Judo Tournament:
At the Provincial Judo Tournament in November, David Billard performed extremely well in Senior's competiton against two opponents. David managed an impressive drop seoi nage against a more experienced opponent, and held his own against the other. Well done David!

Karate-NL Tournament at the PowerPlex.

  • Matthew Hartley won bronze medal in the kata competition in the Karate-NL Tournament at the PowerPlex
  • Matthew Hartley and Joanne Lane competed against stiff kata competition

Judo Tournament: 

  •  Logan, Aidan, Ethan, Noah, Julia, and Nathan competed in a local ne waza tournament at the St. John's Martial Arts Centre
  • On March 16 we received permission from several martial arts organizations to move all our classes into the St. John's Martial Arts Centre at 21 Mews Place (near Pippy Place) in St. John's. We expect the SJMAC to be our permanent location.
  • Early in February we moved Saturday classes from the HGR Mews Cenrre to the 8-LIMB MUAY THAI CENTRE 45 Blackmarsh Road

November & December 2013

  • On November 9th and 10th, Zanshin athletes Logan, Aidan, Ethan, Noah, Julia, and Nathan, competed in the Provincial Judo Tournament and Technical Clinic at the PowerPlex.

October 2013 - Zanshin Dojo: start of Year 4

  • On October 27, Zanshin Dojo Assistant Judy Quinn competed in Senior Karate Kata against two black belts and a brown belt at the Fall Karate-NL Tournament at the PowerPlex
  • On October 28, there was a special class with 7th dan Karate Sensei Wayne Lee in the Martial Arts Centre

September 2013

  • Zanshin KARATE becomes a participating member of the new St. John's Martial Arts Centre at 21 Mews Place (near Pippy Place) in St. John's. KARATE classes are held there Mons & Thurs (5:30pm - 6:30) as well as Saturday mornings (9:30 - 10:30am) in the Mews Centre on Mundy Pond Road. JUDO classes are held Saturday mornings (10:30 - 12:30) in the Mews Centre.

Summer 2013: July & August

  • Zanshin KARATE is invited into the Global Gym on Elizabeth Avenue. In July KARATE classes are held twice-a-week Mons & Thurs (6pm - 7pm) in the Global Gym. JUDO classes are held Saturday mornings (10:30 - 11:30am) in the Mews Centre on Mundy Pond Road.

Spring 2013: April - June

  • Judo Gradings at the Mews Centre - Congratulations Bridget who earned a Yellow belt, and Julia who passed her Orange belt, and Ethan who earned the Yellow-Orange belt, Saturday June 27nd
  • Bowling party went well, with lots of food and prizes.
  • Judy Quinn earned a Blue Belt in Karate, April 20th. Congratulations Judy.

March 2013

November 2012

  • Dojo Assistant Judy Quinn won another medal in Senior Kata competition at the Karate-NL tournament in St. John's. This time its bronze, November 10th. Congratulations Judy.
  • Junior athletes Logan Carnell, and Nathan & Julia Fitzgerald, participated in the Provincial Judo Torunament in St. John's, November 3rd. Congratulations everyone.
  • Sensei Bruce Mann was promoted to 2nd dan black belt in Judo, November 3rd.
  • Karate classes have been extended, and extra classes added, to prepare students for gradings.

October 2012 - Zanshin Dojo: Start of Year 3

  • The first shipment of Zanshin Gear arrived today - jackets, golf shirts, and ball caps. Nice.
  • Classes ended at the Kilbride Lions Community Centre, October 30th
  • Classes started at the Mews Centre, October 6th

May, June, July 2012

  • Classes in karate & judo were held for interested teens and adults at Michael Foley's Academy of Mixed Martial Arts.
  • A Lunchtime Judo Clinic at the Global Gym went well. Scott Tanner, Judo Canada's Atlantic Regional Technical Officer offered several important coaching tips, June 22nd.
  • Spring training at the Mews Centre is winding-down with a bowling & pizza party.
  • Zanshin Dojo did well at the Spring Provincial Judo Tournament in Gander.
  • Matthew Broaders earned a gold medal in his category
  • Logan Carnell won the gold medal in his weight class and a bronze medal in a heavier weight class.

February 2012

  • Karate has moved location to the Mews Centre on Mundy Pond Road in St. John's. The new start time is Saturday mornings 9am - 10am starting this weekend (Feb 11th).
  • Snowstorms two weekends in-a-row forced us to cancel our Judo classes! It's very hard to prepare Judo athletes for their gradings and competitions when we must cancel our Judo classes.

November 2011

  • Zanshin Dojo did very well at the Provincial Judo Tournament. Logan Carnell won both his fights to capture the Gold Medal in his category. Logan showed great skill, especially in the second round with a half-point (wazari) immediately followed by a full point (ippon).
  • Zanshin Instructor Sensei Bruce Mann was promoted to "Provincial A" Judo Referee.

October 2011- Zanshin Dojo: Start of Year 2

  • Zanshin Dojo has purchased 37 new Judo mats and a new 4x8 crash mat from Montreal, just in time for this week's Judo class at the Mews Centre.
  • On October 29th Judy Quinn was awarded the rank of orange belt in Judo. Judy has already earned an orange belt in Karate. Judy now holds orange belts in both Karate and Judo. Congratulations Judy!
  • Senior instructors of the Newfoundland Karate Association held a training seminar on in Clarenville, Oct 29th.

September 2011

  • Our latest revisions to the Insurance Certificates to hold Karate & Judo classes at the Mews Centre & Wedgewood Park Centre were accepted by The City of St. John's.
  • Sincerest thanks go to George Beckett (Nfld & Labrador Judo Assoc), Troy Croft (Sport NL) and Derek Ryan (Karate NL), and to Barb Wade, Ron Thorne and Betty Clarke at the City for their quick responses to my numerous requests.
  • Sincere thanks also to Principal Andrew Hickey and Chris Earle at Holy Trinity High School for giving us a start, and to Judy Quinn for her continued assistance and support of Zanshin Dojo. 09/29/2011.

  • A second Karate demonstration was conducted at lunchtime in the school gym by Sensei Wayne Lee with volunteers from the Goulds Karate Dojo, March 11th
  • Karate & Judo classes continued at Holy Trinity High School with Sensei Bruce Mann, Senpai Bob Davis, Senpai Ed Quinn, and Dojo Assistant Judy Quinn, and 4 students.

November & December 2010

  • Judy Quinn was promoted to yellow belt in Karate, December 20th
  • Bob Davis was promoted to yellow belt in Judo, December 18th

  • A Karate demonstration was conducted at lunchtime in the school gym by Sensei Wayne Lee with volunteers from the Goulds Karate Dojo, December 16th
  • A Judo demonstration was conducted at lunchtime in the school gym by Senpai Ed Quinn with several volunteers from the Canada Winter Games, November 16th

October 2010 - Zanshin Dojo: Start of Year 1

  • Zanshin classes in Karate and Judo started on October 8th at Holy Trinity High School in Torbay, Newfoundland.
  • Weekly classes were held by Sensei Bruce Mann, Senpai Bob Davis, Senpai Ed Quinn, Dojo Assistant Judy Quinn, and 3 students.
  • Occasional demonstrations took place in the school gym, using the school's folding mats.

June 2010

  • Permission to operate a new Karate club was granted in June 2010 by the Newfoundland Karate Association.

June 2008

  • Permission to operate a new Judo club was granted in June 2008 by the Newfoundland & Labrador Judo Association and Judo Canada
